If you want to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, all you have to do is ask. Jesus said, “If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:11-13).
When you ask you must do so in faith, as it’s impossible to receive from God without faith. James 1:6-7 says, “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord.” Furthermore, Jesus said, “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them” (Mark 11:24). You first believe and then you will receive what you have asked for (unless you ask amiss; James 4:3).
The most common method used to baptize someone in the Holy Spirit in the early church was the laying on of hands. Peter and John laid their hands on the believers in Samaria and they received the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:17). Ananias used the same technique with Saul (Acts 9:17). Paul repeated the procedure on the disciples at Ephesus (Acts 19:6).
You can have a Spirit-filled believer lay hands on you or you can receive the Holy Spirit by yourself. Either way, after asking in faith, the Holy Spirit will fill you and give you utterance—the ability to speak in tongues. You must yield to the Holy Spirit, as He will not force you to speak and He does not speak for you. You’ll need to start moving your lips and tongue to make sounds, even though you’ll be speaking out of your spirit. First Corinthians 14:14 says, “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.” Praying in tongues is a spiritual activity that by-passes the intellect.
If you are born-again, desire baptism in the Holy Spirit, and are ready to ask in faith and yield yourself to Him, then say this prayer:
Father, your Word says that you will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. In the name of Jesus, I ask you in faith to baptize and fill me with your precious Holy Spirit.
By faith I receive the Holy Spirit and the ability to speak in tongues. Holy Spirit, I thank you that you will rise up within me and give me utterance as I exercise my heavenly language.
Now yield to the Holy Spirit and start speaking, not in English, but in your new language! Don’t be discouraged if you only speak a few sounds or syllables at first. Much like when you learned English, your vocabulary will expand with time and practice. To stay filled, do it every day!
Joy to you,
